Louise Chut Award for Program Excellence

The Louise Chut Award for Program Excellence, established in 1997, is awarded to recognize outstanding contributions made by a health education project or program.  The project/ program is recognized for the degree with which the program:  addresses key issues in public health, adheres to sound health education principles of needs assessment, program planning, and evaluation, demonstrates collaborative efforts, shows the potential for replication by other agencies, and whose project staff have demonstrated commitment to excellence in the practice of health education.

The Louise Chut Award for Program Excellence is given in honor of member emeritus, Dr. Louise Chut, a charter member of NJ SOPHE who had a long and distinguished career as both a public health practitioner and professor of health education.  Throughout her professional life, Dr. Chut made countless contributions to the practice of health education through her innovative programs and leadership to the profession.  During her tenure at Kean College of New Jersey, she mentored countless students and was an inspiration and teacher to numerous NJ SOPHE members.  Dr. Chut was the first health educator to be appointed and to serve on the New Jersey Public Health Council, where she was a steadfast supporter of the importance of health education in local public health.  In 1993, Dr. Chut was presented with the Frank Osborne Award by the New Jersey Health Officer’s Association, the association’s highest honor for distinguished lifetime service and commitment to public health.
