Our Advocacy Work

The Advocacy committee empowers NJSOPHE members to advocate for priority health issues. As public health professionals, the next step is to get key decision makers to support public health policies.

NJSOPHE members can subscribe to the Advocacy Alerts forum to stay up to date on current issues!

Position Briefs

The Advocacy committee develops position briefs to help raise awareness of key public health topics with legislators, and to establish NJSOPHE as a resource for these issues.

NJSOPHE has published 9 position briefs since 2018.

Activities

Key activities of the advocacy committee include:

  • Meeting with legislators and key decision makers about public health policies

  • Creating advocacy materials that represent our positions on important public health issues

  • Educating our members about public health policies

  • Advocating not only for public health, but for public health professionals as well

  • Supporting our members to be better public health advocates

SOPHE Advocacy Summit

NJSOPHE provides a scholarship for a member to attend the Annual SOPHE Advocacy Summit in Washington, DC. Attendees of the Summit spend several engaging days in skill-building workshops that develop and hone their advocacy skills, with the final day spent visiting officials on Capitol Hill.

How to Get Involved

We invite any interested members to join the Advocacy Committee! Participating in the committee is a fantastic way to learn about the legislative process, support policies that promote public health, and build skills to help you engage with policy makers.

No experience required; just an interest in advocacy! If you are a member and would like to join this committee, please contact Araba Assan at araba125@gmail.com.
