New Jersey Society for Public Health Education

Our Advocacy Work

The Advocacy committee identifies priority health issues related to health education and empowers NJ SOPHE members to advocate for these issues. As public health professionals, we know the importance of health education, but the next step is to get key decision makers to support public health policies.

NJ SOPHE members can subscribe to the Advocacy Alerts forum to stay up to date on current issues!

Position Briefs

The Advocacy committee develops position briefs to help raise awareness of key public health topics with legislators, and to establish NJ SOPHE as a resource for these issues.

Our position briefs:

Key activities of the advocacy committee include:

  • Meeting with legislators and key decision makers to let them know the importance of public health policies (read Governor Murphy's proclamation about Public Health Week 2019)

  • Creating advocacy materials that represent our positions on important public health issues

  • Educating our members about public health policies

  • Advocating not only for public health, but for public health professionals as well

  • Supporting our members to be better public health advocates

Recent advocacy activities include:

SOPHE Advocacy Summit

NJ SOPHE provides an annual scholarship to one NJ SOPHE member to attend the Annual SOPHE Advocacy Summit in Washington, DC. Attendees of the Summit spend an engaging 2.5 days in skill-building workshops designed to develop and hone their advocacy skills, with the final day of the Summit spent visiting officials on Capitol Hill.

Congratulations to Marline Edmond, who won the 2019 Advocacy Summit scholarship!
