Expanding Our Considerations of Cultural Competency Philip T. McCabe CSW, CAS, CDVC, DRCC

Health Educator, Rutgers School of Public Health Center for Public Health Workforce Development

  • Cultural beliefs and traditions can affect help-seeking behavior for the individuals we serve. Culturally responsive care can support an approach to working with members that is essential to healing.
  • Creating an environment that is both culturally competent and trauma informed is essential to reducing health disparities. Much has been addressed about literacy and ethnicity when address culture.   Sexism, racism, ageism, heterosexism, and other oppressions can have a similar impact on individuals who struggle with receiving cultural competence healthcare.
